Good grief, don't do GURPS! Unless you really like lots of complicated math and tons of rules that aren't much fun.
Two systems that are generic but can handle the space genre quite well are Savage Worlds (the explorer edition is only $10 and has a nice set of basics, though that might leave you needing to come up with starship stats on your own) and Big Eyes Small Mouth 2nd edition (sadly out print, but really worth tracking down).
Wait, oops, just saw the 'D20' requirement. Why chain yourself down to D20? Seriously, there are lots of other great systems out there. Many of them would be just as easy to learn as a D20 variant. (GURPS, for the record, is neither D20 nor easy to learn).
Good luck!
because d20 is what I like I've been playing D%26amp;D for 15 years I'm not about to change up now. Looks like yahoo considers my questions "resolved" when it clearly is not. Stupid Yahoo.

Are there any other D%26amp;D type games that involve space travel?GURPS Space by Steve Jackson Games. Are there any other D%26amp;D type games that involve space travel?
I second that. GURPS is a much more open, phenomenal role playing experience. It's usable in any game era (you can do fantasy, modern, caveman era, post nuclear apocalypse, anything you can think of) and overall allows a lot more freedom. Even in fantasy games, far as I'm concerned, GURPS beats the stuffing out of D%26amp;D every time.

Hehe, as for the gentleman below me, the game's rules aren't THAT complicated or mathematical. A little bit involved, but the resources required are minimal, and once you understand it it's easy. D%26amp;D is for nerds that live in their parents' basement. GURPS is for smart nerds that have a shot at making something of themselves :P
Although no longer in print (and thus it may be easy to find cheap), the game Alternity was a fun space RPG.
