How do I stop my Westie from nipping when we play "tug of war" type games?

He is 4 1/2 months old and when we play tug of war type games, he often lunges too close to our hands and nips or inadvertedly bites us. I know this is definitely not good especially if little kids come play with him.

How can I stop this from happening. I have seen other people's dogs and they seem to play alright enough...How do I stop my Westie from nipping when we play "tug of war" type games?
Your pup is still young. Usually they want to win so they "cheat" by nipping the hand so you let go. If you let it happen he will keep doing it. Simple way to stop him is to say in a stern voice "No!" and let go of the toy. Then pick it up again. Keep doing this until he finally stops.

How fast this happens depends on the breed.

Well you could wear something on your hands which would protect you, or also you could wear something on your hands which would shock him or strain his teeth so he would stop. You could also buy some pet tools, like a water sprayer which you connect to his collar and spray him in the face when he tries to bite you. Also you could get a dog whistle which is so high pitched the human ear cant hear it and will shock your dog and that should make him stop. You could look in local pet shops for these or online.

I hope this helped ;)How do I stop my Westie from nipping when we play "tug of war" type games?
Stop playing, take the toy, and yelp when he nips. (Accident or not)

DO NOT LET HIM WIN. That will only add to the problem. He will think that he is stronger than you, so when he does have something bad, he will fight you for it.
