Cost for decent computer to play games on?

I'd like to get a computer to play games on. I'm not sure if the type of games matter, but I like Sims-type games, but also CSI games and games where you can be a veterinarian or take care of pets. (I have varying interests...) I don't care if it's a laptop or desktop. Does anyone know what a computer would cost that could play these types of games? Definitely go with a custom desktop. Use newegg.com to get your parts then put them together or have someone you trust put them together for you. I have had many of our customers say they will never go back to a stock PC after having one built. For a decent gaming machine you should spend around $600.
